Rapid Support Forces Drone Strike Kills Over 70 Worshippers in Sudan Mosque Amid Ongoing Darfur Conflict
A recent drone strike on a mosque in El Fasher, the last Sudanese army stronghold in Darfur, killed at least 75 people during morning prayers, with many more injured, according to multiple sources including local medical personnel and humanitarian groups. The attack has been attributed to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have not claimed responsibility but are actively engaged in a civil war with the Sudanese Armed Forces, seeking to seize full control of the city and surrounding areas. El Fasher has been under siege for over a year, with the RSF intensifying assaults on civilian areas such as the Abu Shouk displacement camp, which they now largely control as evidenced by satellite imagery. The RSF's advances, including occupying a former UN compound used by allied armed groups, threaten critical military and civilian infrastructure in the city. Human rights organizations have condemned the attack as a war crime and part of a broader pattern of brutality that has caused tens of thousands of deaths and millions displaced since conflict escalated in April 2023. The situation remains dire with ongoing fighting and humanitarian crises in Darfur, highlighting the severe impact on civilians trapped in the conflict zone.
