The Scranton Army Ammunition Plant in Pennsylvania has increased its production of 155 mm howitzer rounds by 50% to meet the rising demand for artillery shells in Ukraine's fight against Russia. The plant, along with facilities in Wilkes-Barre, boosted output from 24,000 to 36,000 rounds per month, with further expansions planned. This surge is part of a $400 million modernization project aimed at enhancing production capabilities. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the U.S. has sent over 3 million 155 mm shells to Ukraine. Recently, the White House announced an additional $125 million in weapons aid, including these critical artillery rounds. The Scranton facility, originally a locomotive repair shop, has been operated by General Dynamics since 2006 under a U.S. government contract.
