Sam Altman’s World Launches Orb ID in UK

World, the biometric identity verification project co-founded by OpenAI's Sam Altman and operated by Tools for Humanity, is launching its eye-scanning Orb technology in the UK, beginning in London and expanding to other major cities. The Orb scans users' irises to create a unique World ID, which helps authenticate individuals as human amid rising concerns over AI-generated deepfakes and bots. Participants receive World’s WLD cryptocurrency and can use their World ID for anonymous sign-ins to platforms like Reddit, Discord, and Minecraft. The company reports strong interest from businesses and governments worried about AI-driven identity fraud. World asserts that it encrypts and deletes users' biometric data after use, and operates on a decentralized network for added security. Despite ongoing regulatory scrutiny in some regions, World is pressing ahead with its global rollout.
