IDF Issues 54,000 Draft Orders to Ultra-Orthodox Men in July
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will begin issuing 54,000 draft summonses this July to ultra-Orthodox men whose military service exemptions as yeshiva students have expired following a Supreme Court ruling. These summonses will be sent in phases throughout the month with enlistment appointments scheduled across the entire 2025 draft year, prioritizing individuals with high potential for combat and frontline support roles to meet growing operational demands. The IDF plans to intensify enforcement against draft evaders and deserters across all sectors while considering the shortage of military prison cells and exploring options for expanding facilities. A new program is also planned for September to allow deserters to enlist on probation, potentially avoiding prison time if they comply for a year. Despite the draft push, the IDF emphasizes its commitment to accommodating the unique religious lifestyle of ultra-Orthodox recruits by developing tailored service tracks to facilitate their integration. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is negotiating with Haredi coalition parties to pass legislation legalizing yeshiva deferments, facing threats of coalition collapse and new elections if no agreement is reached.
