Fatal Crash, Brush Fire Close I-580, I-680 Bay Area Freeways

A fatal car crash involving a vehicle fire shut down parts of northbound Highway 13 and westbound I-580 in Oakland early Wednesday, causing delays as authorities investigate. Separately, a fast-moving vegetation fire near the I-680 and I-780 interchange in Benicia on Tuesday afternoon led to a full closure of Interstate 680 in both directions. The Benicia Fire Department and CHP reported the blaze began near Camel Road and quickly spread, prompting a three-alarm response and shutting down all lanes due to smoke and fire crossing the freeway median. Firefighters contained the approximately 10-acre fire within an hour, but traffic remained blocked for several hours to allow for mop-up and prevent flare-ups. No injuries or structural damages were reported from the Benicia fire, though officials continue to investigate its cause. Motorists were advised to avoid the affected I-680 corridor and seek alternate routes during the incidents.
