Canada Bans 324 Firearm Models, Considers Donations to Ukraine

Canada has announced a ban on 324 additional assault-style firearms, expanding its ongoing gun control efforts that began with a 2020 prohibition of 1,500 models. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc stated that these firearms can no longer be legally used, sold, or imported, with limited exceptions for transport. The government is also exploring the possibility of donating some of these firearms to Ukraine to aid in its defense against Russia, as emphasized by Defense Minister Bill Blair. Critics, including Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, argue that the measures unfairly target law-abiding gun owners rather than addressing gun violence itself. The initiative coincides with the 35th anniversary of the École Polytechnique shooting, a tragedy that has influenced Canada's approach to gun control. The Canadian government is also implementing a buyback program for confiscated weapons and investing in border security to combat smuggling.
