Alpha Sigma Phi Chapter Suspended After Injury
Rutgers University and the national Alpha Sigma Phi organization suspended the New Brunswick chapter after a 19-year-old student was found injured and unresponsive at the fraternity’s off‑campus house early Wednesday; the student remains in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating, the university issued a cease‑and‑desist and placed the chapter on organizational disciplinary probation through May 18 and social probation until Nov. 3, and referrals have been directed to prosecutors. City inspectors declared the Alpha Sigma Phi house at 106 College Ave. uninhabitable, citing a history of failed code inspections and a $10,000 fine earlier this year. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the student’s injuries, though one report cited a possible electrical burn or shock; national fraternity leaders say they are gathering information, have placed the chapter on interim suspension, and warned that if hazing is confirmed the chapter will be closed and responsible members expelled. Separately, Southern University recently suspended an Alpha Phi Alpha chapter amid hazing allegations, reflecting heightened scrutiny of Greek‑life hazing nationwide.
