Dominican Republic Nightclub Roof Collapse Kills 124
A tragic roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, resulted in the deaths of at least 124 people, including renowned merengue singer Rubby Pérez and retired Major League Baseball pitcher Octavio Dotel. The incident occurred shortly after midnight during Pérez's concert, leading to a chaotic scene as emergency services struggled to rescue survivors from the debris. Dotel, who was rescued but later succumbed to his injuries, was among several notable figures present at the event, including the governor of Monte Cristi, Nelsy Cruz. Eyewitnesses reported a sudden blackout followed by the roof's collapse, which affected a crowd estimated between 500 and 1,000. Rescue operations continued as families gathered outside the venue, anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. President Luis Abinader has declared three days of national mourning in response to the disaster.
