93-Year-Old Woman Killed in Independence Accident

Sophia Machajewski, a 93-year-old woman, was struck and killed by a vehicle on Saturday evening near the intersection of Lee’s Summit Road and 38th Street in Independence, Missouri. The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. as Machajewski was unexpectedly in the roadway. She was a parishioner at St. Mark Catholic Church and had attended mass just prior to the accident. The driver of the Toyota Avalon involved in the crash was not injured and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. While speed and alcohol were not factors, police are considering fog as a potential contributor to the reduced visibility at the time of the accident.
