Assam Government Discusses Clause 6 Implementation

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with leaders of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) to discuss the implementation of Justice (Retd) Biplab Sarma Committee's recommendations regarding Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which aims to protect the cultural identity of the Assamese people. The Chief Minister confirmed that the recommendations would not be enforced in the Barak Valley and areas under the Sixth Schedule without local consent, focusing instead on Brahmaputra Valley districts. The committee's proposals include 40 recommendations for state implementation and 15 for the central government, with Sarma committing to implement 52 of the 67 total recommendations by April 2024. AASU leaders have urged the state government to advocate for the full implementation of the recommendations at the central level, recalling promises made by Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for October 25 to further discuss the action plan and collaboration on the recommendations.
