The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has criticized Uttarakhand authorities for failing to establish a carrying capacity for pilgrims at four major shrines: Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. This concern came after a petition highlighted unregulated waste disposal along the pilgrimage routes and the lack of accountability in case of accidents due to overcrowding. Previously, a carrying capacity was set in May 2022 but was withdrawn in April 2023 amid protests. As of now, the NGT has mandated the state’s environment department secretary to clarify who would be responsible for potential mishaps. This inquiry follows a recent tragic cloudburst that resulted in casualties and left many pilgrims stranded, raising further safety concerns. The tribunal is scheduled to hear from the environment secretary on September 12 regarding these issues.
