Shell Advances Gato do Mato Oil Project in Brazil
Shell Brasil, a subsidiary of Shell plc, has made the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Gato do Mato deepwater project located in the pre-salt area of Brazil's Santos Basin, with operations expected to commence in 2029. The project, which includes partners Ecopetrol and TotalEnergies, aims to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day from recoverable resource estimates of approximately 370 million barrels. The development plan features a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, and initial operations will focus on reinjecting natural gas for reservoir pressure support. According to Shell's Integrated Gas and Upstream Director, the Gato do Mato project exemplifies their commitment to efficient energy solutions while maintaining stable production and enhancing their position as the largest foreign producer in Brazil. The consortium anticipates future options to export gas to onshore facilities as part of the project's operational strategy.
