Angelo Mathews Confirms Test Retirement Date

Angelo Mathews, one of Sri Lanka's leading cricketers, has announced that he will retire from Test cricket after the opening Test against Bangladesh in Galle on June 17, where he also made his debut in 2009. Mathews is Sri Lanka’s third-highest Test run-scorer with 8,167 runs, 16 centuries, 45 fifties, and over 30 wickets, and served as Test captain from 2013 to 2017, becoming the country’s third most successful leader in the format. He cited national pride, the desire to create space for younger players, and Sri Lanka's shift toward white-ball cricket ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup as factors in his decision. Mathews will continue to be available for ODIs and T20Is. His retirement follows similar recent departures by cricket greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, signaling the end of an era for Test cricket.
