The new film, tentatively titled The Social Network Part II, draws inspiration from The Wall Street Journal's 2021 Facebook Files, which revealed internal documents showing Facebook's awareness of the harmful effects of its algorithms, including impacts on teenage mental health and the spread of misinformation. Sorkin, who will both write and direct the sequel, aims to explore Facebook's role in divisive events such as the January 6 Capitol riot and its broader global influence, though the film is not solely about January 6. The project is in early development with no confirmed casting, though Jesse Eisenberg may reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg. Sony Pictures is producing the film alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser, with expectations that it will offer sharp commentary on the darker side of Facebook's evolution.
