Colorado Rockies Fire Manager Bud Black After Historic 7-33 Start
The Colorado Rockies have fired longtime manager Bud Black and bench coach Mike Redmond following a historically poor 7-33 start to the 2025 MLB season, despite a morale-boosting 9-3 win over the San Diego Padres that snapped an eight-game losing streak. Black, the winningest and longest-tenured manager in franchise history, led the Rockies to playoff appearances in his first two seasons (2017-18) but failed to deliver a winning season since, with the club now facing its seventh consecutive losing year and a likely third straight 100-loss campaign. Third base coach Warren Schaeffer has been promoted to interim manager for the remainder of the season, and hitting coach Clint Hurdle will serve as interim bench coach. Rockies owner Dick Monfort acknowledged the team’s unacceptable performance and indicated the remainder of the season will be used to evaluate and improve all aspects of the organization. Black departs with a 544-690 record in Colorado and over 1,100 managerial wins across his career, having also managed the Padres previously. The move follows the firing of Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton earlier this week, marking two managerial changes in MLB already this season.
