Kerala Issues Rain Alerts as Heavy Rain Expected
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala due to expected heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, warning that conditions may persist until October 11. Thirteen districts are under rain alerts, with Idukki, Malappuram, and Wayanad facing an orange alert for severe weather, forecasting rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours. The IMD noted the formation of a cyclonic circulation over southern Kerala, which is likely to develop into a low-pressure system, further intensifying rainfall. Significant rainfall has already been recorded across the state, including 93 mm at Kannur Airport and 71 mm in Anakkayam, Malappuram. Local authorities are advising residents to exercise caution, especially in landslide-prone areas, and fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea off the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast until October 10. The IMD urges everyone to stay alert as thunderstorms and gusty winds of up to 40 km/h are anticipated.
