Roblox Launches Licensing Platform With Netflix, Lionsgate, Sega Partners
Roblox has launched a new self-serve licensing platform called Roblox License Manager that enables intellectual property (IP) holders like Netflix, Lionsgate, Sega, and Kodansha to quickly and easily offer their rights to creators on the platform. This tool streamlines a previously complex and lengthy licensing process, allowing creators to apply for licenses and build official, monetizable game experiences based on popular franchises such as Squid Game, Stranger Things, Twilight, Saw, Divergent, and Like a Dragon. Roblox aims for 10% of all gaming content revenue on its platform to benefit the creator community, and this initiative is designed to encourage more polished, official content rather than fan-made, unlicensed games that risk takedown. The service is initially launching with seven franchises, with plans to add more IPs and license types later, expanding opportunities for both large and smaller creators to collaborate with rights holders. This effort reflects a broader trend in gaming where brands seek faster, scalable ways to integrate their IPs into user-generated content ecosystems. Roblox's approach contrasts with traditional licensing by offering a flexible, global, and scalable framework, making it easier to create interactive experiences tied to well-known media properties.
