Indian shot-putter Hokato Hotozhe Sema, a landmine blast survivor, secured a bronze medal with a career-best throw of 14.65 meters in the men's F57 category at the Paris Paralympics 2024, which marked India's best-ever performance with a total of 29 medals. Sema, who lost his left leg in an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2002, was encouraged to take up para shot put in 2016 by a senior army official at the Pune-based Artificial Limb Centre. He is the first para-athlete from India's Northeast to secure a Paralympic medal. His journey in para-athletics has been remarkable, achieving notable success, including a bronze at the 2022 Asian Para Games and a silver at the Morocco Grand Prix. The gold in the event was won by Iran's Yasin Khosravi with a Paralympic record of 15.96 meters, while Brazil's Thiago Dos Santos secured silver with 15.06 meters. Sema's achievement adds to India's growing Paralympic success and serves as an inspiring story of triumph over adversity.
