Agusto Matias, a 37-year-old man, has been charged with multiple felonies, including felony gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, following a hit-and-run incident in Oakland on August 19 that resulted in the death of 17-year-old Mardenia Carrillo Lopez and injuries to her mother. The incident occurred when Matias allegedly struck the victims while they were in a crosswalk, fleeing from a previous minor collision. After the collision, Matias crashed his vehicle a short distance away, where he was apprehended by law enforcement. Mardenia's death has devastated her family and community, with a GoFundMe campaign launched to assist with funeral costs. District Attorney Pamela Price condemned Matias's reckless behavior, emphasizing the preventable nature of such tragedies. Matias is currently facing a $230,000 arrest warrant and remains under investigation.
