Bangladesh students protest
In Bangladesh, the student group Students Against Discrimination is threatening to resume protests unless their detained leaders, including chief Nahid Islam, are released by Sunday. The recent unrest has resulted in at least 205 fatalities, marking a significant challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 15-year governance. Abdul Hannan Masud, a spokesperson for the group, emphasized the need for accountability against those responsible for the deaths of protesters, warning of 'tough protests' if their demands are not met. The government has imposed army patrols and a nationwide curfew in response to the violence, which was fueled by a controversial civil service job quota system. The students are advocating for the complete abolition of this quota system, which they argue disproportionately benefits ruling party loyalists. The Home Minister claimed that the detained leaders were taken for their own safety, but did not clarify their formal arrest status.
