Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) has reported monitoring extensive Chinese military exercises in Fujian province, which included various aircraft, helicopters, drones, and amphibious ships conducting joint landing drills near Dacheng Bay, just across the Taiwan Strait. These maneuvers, detected starting on September 3, have raised concerns due to Taiwan's ongoing tensions with China, which claims the island as its territory. Despite the increased military activity, Taiwan's defense ministry believes China currently lacks the capability for a full invasion. The situation has intensified since Taiwan's new president, William Lai, took office in May, prompting China to ramp up military pressure and incursions into Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The MND also noted that these drills are part of a broader trend of Chinese military provocations, referred to as 'gray zone tactics'. Lai has reiterated that Taiwan's future should be determined solely by its people, amid ongoing calls for dialogue with Beijing, which have been largely ignored.
