Borussia Dortmund, JA Solar Plan World's Largest Stadium Roof Solar Installation

JA SOLAR and Borussia Dortmund have announced a partnership to install the largest photovoltaic system on a stadium roof at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, aiming to generate over 4 GWh of renewable electricity annually. This initiative reflects both organizations' commitment to sustainability and is expected to reduce the club's carbon footprint by approximately 1,800 tons of CO₂ per year. However, the collaboration has drawn criticism from local stakeholders, including Carsten Rohr, who argues that partnering with JA Solar contradicts Borussia Dortmund's values due to the company's alleged involvement in unfair labor practices in China. Installation of the solar modules, which will consist of over 11,000 high-efficiency Full-Black units, is planned to start in the summer of 2025. The project is positioned as a model for integrating renewable energy solutions in sports infrastructure while enhancing energy security for the club. Despite the backlash, both JA SOLAR and Borussia Dortmund view this project as a significant step forward in the global energy transition.
