Nikon Launches ZR Cinema Camera with 6K RAW, RED Color Science

Nikon has launched the ZR, its first cinema camera under the new Z Cinema series, marking the debut of Nikon's integration with RED Digital Cinema technology following its 2024 acquisition. The full-frame, ultra-lightweight ZR offers advanced video capabilities, including internal 12-bit RAW recording up to 6K/60p using the new R3D NE RAW codec based on RED's renowned REDCODE RAW format, providing over 15 stops of dynamic range and consistent color science with RED cameras such as the V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X. It features a large 4-inch DCI-P3 LCD screen bright enough for outdoor use, 32-bit float audio recording with Nokia’s OZO directional sound technology, and 7.5 stops of in-body image stabilization, alongside a fast autofocus system driven by AI-based subject detection. The camera supports a wide range of lenses through the Nikon Z mount, has dual base ISOs of 800 and 6400 for flexible shooting conditions, and offers various recording formats including N-RAW and ProRes RAW. Priced around $2,200 to $3,000, the ZR delivers high-end cinematic features in a compact and weather-sealed body, designed to appeal to emerging cinematographers and professional creators seeking a versatile and portable filmmaking solution.
