China Offers Free 10-Day Trips to US Influencers to Promote ‘Real China’
China is offering an all-expenses-paid, 10-day trip in July to American social media influencers with at least 300,000 followers as part of the "China-Global Youth Influencer Exchange Program." This state-backed initiative aims to promote people-to-people exchanges and showcase the "real China" by encouraging influencers to collaborate with Chinese content creators and share their experiences widely, supported by Chinese state media. The program includes visits to five cities—Suzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Handan, and Beijing—with stops at e-commerce hubs, major companies, and cultural landmarks such as the Great Wall, along with activities like Tai Chi lessons. Applicants must be U.S.-based, active on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or X, demonstrate love for Chinese culture, and have no history of bad behavior; Chinese students abroad are also encouraged to recommend candidates. This effort reflects Beijing's soft-power push amid ongoing U.S.-China tensions and aligns with President Xi Jinping's calls for deeper academic and cultural engagement, including increased student exchanges. Influencers who positively portray China have previously received state support, underscoring the strategic use of digital diplomacy in shaping global perceptions.
