US Envoy Barrack Urges Lebanon to Disarm Hezbollah amid Reform Talks

U.S. Special Envoy Thomas Barrack has urged Lebanon to act swiftly on reforms and the disarmament of Hezbollah, warning that while President Donald Trump is committed to supporting Lebanon, his patience is limited. Barrack acknowledged Lebanon’s official response to the American disarmament proposal, describing it as thoughtful and promising, but emphasized that Lebanon must seize the current opportunity for peace and reform or risk being left behind as the region advances. He reiterated the U.S. position that Hezbollah, designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, needs to see a future in Lebanese politics, with peace and prosperity, despite its militant activities. Barrack's diplomatic efforts include meetings with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, all of whom express commitment to bringing arms under state control. However, Hezbollah leaders have rejected disarmament, citing Israeli threats and warning of confrontation, complicating the process. Barrack stressed that security and peace are fundamental for Lebanon’s progress and that the U.S. will not tolerate continued delay or obstruction in reforms and disarmament.
