60-Year-Old Arrested After Croydon Park Shooting
A man allegedly fired roughly 50 to 100 rounds from a unit above shops on Georges River Road in Croydon Park, Sydney, on Sunday evening, prompting lockdowns and shelter-in-place alerts as rounds struck passers-by, vehicles and buildings. One man in his 50s was shot in the neck and chest, underwent surgery and remains in critical condition; at least 16 people were treated for minor injuries at the scene and some reports put the wounded total at up to 20. Heavily armed specialist police surrounded the building, entered after the suspect barricaded himself, and arrested a 60-year-old about 9:30 p.m.; the suspect was wounded during the confrontation and taken to hospital under police guard. Firearms were seized and multiple cars, a bus shelter and shopfronts were damaged, though no officers were injured. Police have launched a major investigation into motive and said they are not treating the incident as linked to terrorism or gang activity.
