EU Ministers Plan Renewable Energy Hub in Mediterranean

Energy officials from nine southern European Union countries, known as the MED9 group, have reaffirmed their commitment to transforming the Mediterranean into a renewable energy hub to combat climate change. During a recent conference in Larnaca, Cyprus, they emphasized the need for cross-border projects focusing on offshore wind and solar energy, urging the European Commission to carry out a comprehensive study on the region's renewable energy potential. The officials highlighted the importance of streamlining regulations to attract investors and improve collaboration. They also discussed specific initiatives, such as a subsea electricity cable linking Cyprus to continental Europe. This effort aligns with the broader goals established at the COP28 climate conference, which aims for net zero emissions and enhanced renewable energy capacity globally. The MED9 ministers stressed the critical need for effective communication and cooperation with the European Commission to achieve these ambitious energy targets.
