Tripura has been declared a 'Natural Calamity Affected Area' following unprecedented floods from August 19 to 23 that resulted in the loss of at least 32 lives and extensive damage to public and private property, with preliminary estimates of damages reaching Rs 15,000 crore. The Tripura Disaster Management Authority's decision was made during an emergency meeting attended by Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha. A five-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) has arrived to assess the situation, focusing on the hardest-hit Gomati and South Tripura districts. As a result of the flooding, 369 relief camps are currently sheltering over 53,000 displaced individuals, providing essential supplies and medical aid. Authorities are also implementing hygiene measures to prevent waterborne diseases, with health services conducting over 1,800 health check-ups in the camps. Restoration efforts for power supply and infrastructure are ongoing as the state continues recovery operations.
