Bangladesh Election Commission Suspends Sheikh Hasina's Party Registration, Bars Election Participation
Bangladesh's interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has banned all activities of the former ruling party, the Awami League, and its affiliated organizations under the Anti-Terrorism Act, citing involvement in criminal activities and national security threats. Following this, the Bangladesh Election Commission suspended the Awami League's registration, effectively barring it from contesting the upcoming national elections. The ban prohibits the party from engaging in any political activities, including media campaigns, public gatherings, and online presence, until the International Crimes Tribunal completes its trial of the party's leaders. The decision has drawn criticism from the Awami League, which accuses the interim government of undermining democratic norms and fostering division. Analysts warn that while the party must be held accountable for past abuses, banning it outright risks further political polarization and may complicate efforts for national reconciliation. This move comes amid heightened political tensions in Bangladesh, following deadly protests and the ousting of Prime Minister Hasina in 2024.
