India has formally requested a review and modification of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan, citing fundamental and unforeseen changes in circumstances since the treaty's inception in 1960. The notice, issued on August 30, 2024, under Article XII(3) of the treaty, highlights issues such as changing population demographics, the need for clean energy, and persistent cross-border terrorism. India has accused Pakistan of obstructing Indian hydropower projects and taking undue advantage of the treaty. This marks the second such notice in recent years, following one in January 2023. The World Bank, a signatory to the treaty, has been involved in the ongoing disputes, complicating the situation further.
