The City of Columbus, in partnership with the Office of Violence Prevention and the Columbus Division of Police, hosted its second annual gun buyback event aimed at reducing gun violence by collecting unwanted firearms. Participants received gift cards of up to $750 for turning in handguns, rifles, shotguns, and assault rifles. Last year's event successfully collected 344 guns, and officials are hopeful for similar or improved results this year. The collected firearms are checked for criminal history before being destroyed to ensure they are permanently removed from circulation. Mayor Andrew Ginther emphasized the importance of community involvement in keeping guns out of the hands of children and criminals. The event is part of a broader initiative to enhance public safety in Columbus.
