Former Cincinnati Doctor Pleads Guilty Lying 1989 Rape Investigation

Frederick Louis Tanzer, a 66-year-old former doctor from the Cincinnati area, pleaded guilty to making false statements to federal agents in connection with a violent 1989 rape case. Tanzer was identified as the suspect after DNA from a coffee cup he discarded in 2024 matched DNA found on the victim, who was raped for over five hours in her home. He denied any interaction with the victim during questioning but was found to have lied to investigators, leading to charges of false statements rather than rape itself due to the statute of limitations. Prosecutors described Tanzer as a likely serial sexual predator, given the nature of the crime and evidence found in his home, and authorities have encouraged other possible victims to come forward. Tanzer surrendered his medical license and remains in custody pending sentencing, facing up to 15 years in prison for his convictions. The victim has also filed a civil lawsuit against him.
