Sudanese Asylum Seeker Convicted of Murdering UK Hotel Worker
Deng Chol Majek, a Sudanese asylum seeker, was found guilty of the murder of Rhiannon Whyte, a hotel worker he stabbed 23 times on a railway station platform in Walsall. The attack occurred shortly after Majek, who had entered the UK by small boat less than three months prior, was reported to security for staring at female staff, including Whyte. CCTV evidence showed Majek tracking Whyte to Bescot Stadium station and attacking her, after which he calmly went on to buy beer and was seen wiping blood from his clothes. Majek denied the charges and lied about his age, claiming to be 19 despite records showing he was 27. The jury deliberated for just over two hours before unanimously convicting him of murder and possession of a screwdriver as an offensive weapon. Throughout the trial and sentencing, Majek showed no emotion, and no clear motive was established for the fatal attack on the mother of a five-year-old son.
