Released in 1999, 'Mule Variations' was the inaugural album of the Anti-Records label, founded by Epitaph specifically for this project, and it won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Epitaph's founder Brett Gurewitz expressed gratitude for the album's role in launching the label and its lasting partnership with Waits.
