EU Calls for Ban on Russian Gas Imports

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has invited Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to visit Kyiv this Friday, responding to Fico's earlier proposal for a meeting to discuss the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukraine. Fico has expressed that the halt in gas supplies has negatively impacted Slovakia, resulting in higher energy prices and lost transit revenue. The two leaders have recently clashed over energy policies, with Zelensky accusing Fico of opening a 'second energy front' under Moscow's influence. Fico's visit to Moscow in December to discuss gas transit arrangements has drawn criticism from Ukraine. Zelensky has previously offered support to Slovakia to cope with the transition away from Russian gas. The ongoing discussions highlight the tensions within Europe regarding energy security and dependence on Russian supplies.
