Kenya and UAE Discuss Railway Extension Project

Kenya is actively pursuing a partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to secure funding for the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to connect with Uganda and South Sudan. This initiative comes after China's withdrawal of funding for the project, leaving a 468-kilometer gap to the Ugandan border. President William Ruto announced plans for a feasibility study during discussions in Abu Dhabi, emphasizing the railway's potential to enhance regional trade and integration. Additionally, Kenya and the UAE have signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement aimed at facilitating trade by eliminating barriers. Ruto highlighted the importance of the railway in transforming regional connectivity and boosting economic growth. The ongoing collaboration also includes investments in agriculture, particularly the Galana-Kulalu irrigation project.
