A state audit has revealed that Brian Busch, the former manager of the machine shop at the University of Iowa’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, embezzled nearly $1 million from the university. From July 2017 to September 2021, Busch deposited $943,635 into his personal accounts by using university staff and equipment to fulfill contracts for his own company, D3Signtech. Busch also made $6,313 in improper purchases with a university-issued card. This incident is part of a pattern of conflicts of interest at the University of Iowa, with previous reports and another investigation ongoing. The university has since placed Busch on administrative leave and updated its internal controls and procedures. The findings have been referred to multiple agencies for further action, including possible criminal charges.
