Five individuals are facing federal charges for allegedly organizing regular cockfighting events in San Bernardino County, where attendees paid to watch and bet on fights that sometimes resulted in the death of the roosters. The events reportedly took place in Muscoy during the cockfighting season from January to August, with over 100 participants at times. Attendees had to pay a $40 entry fee and a $20 parking fee at a nearby location before being shuttled to the venue, where they could also purchase refreshments. Each rooster was often fitted with a sharp blade known as a 'gaff' before fights, which were orchestrated in a pit from which the animals could not escape. Four suspects were arrested, while a fifth, Cirilo Esquivel Alcantar, remains at large. If convicted, the defendants could face up to five years in prison for their involvement in this illegal activity.
