The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled that it has jurisdiction over competing anti-discrimination cases brought by Armenia and Azerbaijan. The court dismissed preliminary objections from Azerbaijan regarding Armenia's case, which alleges violations of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. Concurrently, the court upheld some of Armenia's objections to Azerbaijan's counterclaim, limiting its scope. Both countries accuse each other of ethnic cleansing, with Armenia claiming Azerbaijan's actions led to the mass displacement of ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh. The ICJ had previously mandated Azerbaijan to allow the return of displaced ethnic Armenians. Hearings on the merits of both cases are expected to commence next year.
