M&S CEO Criticizes Expanded Post-Brexit Food Labelling in Northern Ireland
Marks and Spencer's chief executive Stuart Machin has strongly criticized the final phase of the Windsor Framework's food labelling requirements as 'bureaucratic madness,' highlighting the operational challenges and increased costs for retailers. From next week, over 1,000 M&S products destined for Northern Ireland will need 'Not for EU' labels, with another 400 products subject to additional checks, aimed at preventing UK goods from entering the EU single market via the Republic of Ireland. Machin described the rules as confusing for customers and unnecessary given the UK's high food standards, expressing hope that they will become obsolete once the UK and EU finalize a new sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agrifood agreement. The Windsor Framework, designed to address trade complexities post-Brexit, keeps Northern Ireland aligned with the EU single market for goods while attempting to ease trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Despite reduced checks under the Framework compared to the original Northern Ireland Protocol, the labelling and checks remain a significant burden for businesses. Political negotiations over the SPS deal continue amid concerns about regulatory alignment and the impact on UK food production innovation.
