Boston Celtics sold for record $6.1 billion
The Boston Celtics have been sold to William Chisholm, managing partner of Symphony Technology Group, for a record $6.1 billion, marking the largest sale of a North American sports franchise. The deal, which surpasses the previous record set by the Washington Commanders' $6.05 billion sale, comes after the Grousbeck family announced their intention to sell the team last July, shortly after the Celtics won their latest NBA title. Wyc Grousbeck, who led the Grousbeck family in purchasing the team for $360 million in 2002, will remain as governor through the 2027-2028 season. A portion of the sale will also involve Sixth Street and other minority owners. Chisholm, a lifelong Celtics fan, is expected to lead the team into a new era. This significant transaction highlights the increasing valuations of NBA franchises.
