California Battery Storage Capacity Surges Nearly 2,000% Since 2019 to 15,700 MW
California has rapidly expanded its battery storage capacity to over 15,700 megawatts, marking nearly a 2,000% increase since 2019, with 2,300 megawatts added since last September alone. This surge is a key component of the state's strategy to stabilize the electrical grid, store excess renewable energy, and meet ambitious climate goals, aiming for 52,000 megawatts of battery storage by 2045. About 16% of this capacity comes from residential and commercial installations, providing backup power to thousands of homes, schools, and businesses. Despite the benefits, concerns have arisen following a major fire at the Moss Landing facility, leading to calls from local communities to slow expansion and improve safety measures. In response, California has implemented new safety standards for battery storage facilities, updated fire codes, and established a statewide task force to address risks as battery use grows. Governor Gavin Newsom emphasizes that these efforts are vital to building a cleaner, more reliable power grid while supporting economic growth and greenhouse gas emission reductions.
