Argentina Places Nazi Official’s Daughter, Husband Under Arrest in Nazi-Looted Painting Case
Argentine authorities have placed Patricia Kadgien, daughter of Nazi official Friedrich Kadgien, and her husband under house arrest amid investigations into the disappearance of a 17th-century painting stolen by Nazis during World War II. The painting, "Portrait of a Lady" by Giuseppe Ghislandi, was part of the collection of Dutch Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, who died fleeing the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands. The artwork was recently spotted in a real estate listing for a property owned by Kadgien's family in Mar del Plata, Argentina, but vanished before police could recover it. Authorities have conducted multiple raids on properties linked to the Kadgien family, recovering other older artworks but not the missing painting. Patricia Kadgien and her husband claim they are rightful owners and have proposed placing the painting in court custody pending resolution, while prosecutors intend to charge them with concealing stolen property related to genocide. Interpol and Argentine federal police are involved in the ongoing search, as Goudstikker's heirs seek to reclaim the painting listed on international stolen art registries.
