Malaysia, Indonesia Advance Large-Scale Renewable Energy Projects
Several major renewable energy projects are underway in Southeast Asia, emphasizing solar and wind power expansions. In Sarawak, Malaysia, Founder Group and Planet QEOS plan a 310 MWp solar project paired with a 620 MWh battery storage system, alongside a 200 MW green data center, marking Malaysia's first firm solar power plant designed to provide continuous, dispatchable electricity. Leader Energy Group is developing a 100 MW solar farm in Tanjung Manis, Sarawak, aiming for completion by 2027 to support Sarawak's low-carbon energy goals. Indonesia's state utility PLN is constructing a 92 MW floating solar plant on the Saguling reservoir, expected to reduce carbon emissions significantly and begin operations by 2026. Additionally, a Masdar-led consortium won a bid for a 200 MW floating solar plant at Chereh Dam in Malaysia, the largest in Southeast Asia, highlighting regional ambitions for floating solar farms, including plans for an even larger 1,000 MW floating solar installation at Sarawak's Murum dam. Meanwhile, China has completed assembly of the world's largest single-unit floating offshore wind turbine, expected to generate enough electricity to power over 4,000 homes, underscoring rapid advancements in marine renewable energy.
