Manipur Police Establish Anti-Extortion Cell

In response to a significant rise in extortion activities linked to ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, the state police have established an anti-extortion cell led by the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order). The initiative has been prompted by numerous complaints from the public, including educational institutions and government employees, about illegal taxes and harassment from underground groups. Since its formation, the cell has arrested over 121 extortionists and more than 215 members of these groups, while also deploying 15 specialized crack teams across districts to combat extortion. The police are working alongside the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to ensure the safe transport of essential goods on national highways and have intensified surveillance in identified hotspots. Officials have called for public cooperation in reporting extortion incidents, emphasizing the importance of community support in curbing these illegal activities. This coordinated effort marks a crucial step in addressing the economic hardships and mental distress caused by organized crime in the region.
