Martin Lewis Urges Energy Firms to Limit Backbilling to Six Months

Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, has criticized energy firms for unfairly backbilling customers due to faulty meters and lack of accurate billing practices. Appearing before the Energy Security and Net Zero Committee, he highlighted that under Ofgem regulations, companies cannot charge for energy used more than 12 months ago if customers were not notified properly. Lewis called for stricter enforcement of these rules, pointing out that ambiguity in the regulations has allowed some companies to take advantage of consumers. He specifically noted that the energy sector lacks care and diligence in its billing practices, which could lead to significant financial burdens for consumers. Lewis also suggested that the allowable back-billing period should be reduced to six months, given advancements in smart meter technology.
