Woody Guthrie Estate Releases 13 Unheard Songs From 1950s Home Recordings

A previously unheard collection of Woody Guthrie's home recordings, titled 'Woody At Home — Volumes 1 & 2,' is set for release on August 14, 2025. The album features 22 recordings, including 13 songs never before heard, with some tracks containing alternate versions and spoken interludes recorded in Guthrie's home in the early 1950s. These recordings were made on a single-microphone reel-to-reel tape recorder gifted by his publisher, intended to capture new songs for sheet music publication. Despite challenges with audio quality due to the limited recording technology and Guthrie's declining health from Huntington's disease, modern restoration techniques have enhanced the tapes, bringing his voice and guitar into clearer focus. The release offers fans a rare opportunity to hear Guthrie's intimate performances and previously unknown material, including the only known recording of "Deportee" and alternate verses of "This Land is Your Land." The project underscores the enduring relevance of Guthrie's themes of workers' rights and social justice while preserving his legacy decades after his passing.
