Philippines, Cambodia Strengthen Cooperation Against Human Trafficking, Transnational Crime
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet have strengthened bilateral cooperation to combat transnational crimes, including human trafficking and cyber offenses, by updating a 2016 memorandum of understanding between their national police forces. This expanded agreement aims to address emerging security challenges such as online fraud, illicit drug trafficking, and cybercrimes through coordinated law enforcement efforts. Marcos emphasized the importance of swift and effective cooperation to maintain public safety and regional stability during his state visit to Phnom Penh, where additional accords on air services and higher education were also signed to enhance connectivity and human capital. The two countries also committed to updating agreements on migrant worker welfare and employment to prevent illegal recruitment and exploitation, reflecting a shared determination to fight criminal elements misusing technology. Meanwhile, Cambodia faces economic pressures, including adjusted U.S. tariffs on its exports, prompting efforts to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on single markets. The recent Thai-Cambodian conflict has also negatively impacted tourism in both countries, underscoring the broader regional implications of political disputes on economic and cultural ties.
