North Korea, Russia begin construction of Tumen River bridge

North Korea and Russia have begun constructing a new road bridge over the Tumen River, marking what both nations describe as a significant milestone in their deepening relationship. The bridge, agreed upon during President Vladimir Putin's 2024 visit to North Korea, is intended to boost economic cooperation, facilitate travel, tourism, and trade, and serve as a symbol of their strengthened alliance. North Korea has gained economic and military benefits from this partnership, notably in exchange for supplying arms to Russia amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict. Pyongyang is also working with Russia on industrial modernization across 14 sectors, including metals, aviation, and energy. Leaders from both countries have emphasized the bridge as a lasting symbol of their friendship, with expectations that it will increase commerce and people-to-people exchanges despite extensive international sanctions.
