107-Year-Old WWII Veteran Receives Iowa High School Diploma

Orville Von Ehwegen, a 107-year-old resident of Sac City, Iowa, was honored with a high school diploma during the East Sac County High School Class of 2025 commencement ceremony. Ehwegen left school at age 14 during the Great Depression to help on his family farm and later served in the U.S. Army during World War II, fighting in the South Pacific. Despite thinking he would never receive a diploma, longtime friends and the school district arranged for him to be awarded an honorary diploma, recognizing his sacrifices and contributions. Ehwegen expressed joy at graduating alongside the current class and reflected on the value of education, sharing wisdom with the graduates. The district principal and friends hope Ehwegen's story inspires younger generations to appreciate the sacrifices made during the Depression and WWII.
